American Idol - 5/14/08 Elimination

[ Edit: Syesha Mercado was eliminated ]

Well the top three sang tonight, it’s going to be weird doing the reviews because I don’t have anything negative to say about the remaining people. Now that everyone I didn’t like is gone I’m at a loss for harsh words. So before I critique, here is a recap of what they all sang.

  • David Archuleta: “And So It Goes”, “With You” and “Longer”
  • Syesha Mercado: “If I Ain’t Got You”, “Fever” and “Hit Me Up”
  • David Cook: “First Time I Ever Saw Your Face”, “Dare You to Move” and “I Don’t Want to Miss a Thing”

David Archuleta had a strong showing again tonight. I think all three of his performances were top quality yet again. I don’t understand why the judges didn’t like him singing that pop-style song genre though. He did it well and is flexible with what he can sing. He isn’t restricted to just ballads.

Archuleta is also coming along well with the whole shyness thing. He was really getting into the first song and worked the audience into it. So that brings me back to not understanding why the judges complained about it.

Syesha Mercado got a lot of unnecessary heat tonight from the judges. I dunno why Randy was constantly saying it wasn’t right for her. The song choices seemed to fit her vocals perfectly and she really got me into each song. So it was just weird to see some of the judges complaining. She has that foxy woman thing going for her that works well for songs such as “Fever.”

David Cook had the best song of the night with his last one, “I Don’t Want to Miss a Thing.” That was the highlight of the night for me. The other two songs were also strong performances as usual. I only wish he got some slightly more rock styled songs, he really comes to life with those.

The judges were really confusing me though, especially Randy. He just seemed to have nothing good to say at all. I found myself (strangely) agreeing with Paula a lot instead of Simon this time.

This is a tough one to call though, but I’m leaning towards Syesha being the one that goes home. The “Fever” song just seemed a bit out there, and not very in tune with the theme of Idol. The “working the chair” bit seemed a bit risky to do, maybe if the audience was a bunch of men it could of worked better. So in light of that, and all the criticism she got from the judges (them being able to influence votes), I think she’s going to be the one leaving.

American Idol 5/7/08 Follow-Up

Well, I think I speak for a lot of people when I say, THANK GOD JASON IS GONE. That was seriously getting annoying that he was still in the competition up to this point. He really should of gone long before Michael Johns or Carly. Brooke and Jason shouldn’t of made it as far as they should of. He really had to go. His last performance was atrocious, especially when he forget his lines and just sang “la la la” and hummed along with the music. How do you mess up that bad this far into the competition?

Castro Dumb

I think he also knew it was his time to go. The way he talked it sounded like he realized he didn’t deserve to be above Syesha or the Davids. He even mentioned his inexperience coming in to haunt him.

The Jason fans are quite the rabid bunch as well. One girl claims to have voted over a thousand times the other night.

Jason Votes

Now I’m pretty sure that’s an exaggeration, but still. 95% of the people that voted for him were blindly voting for him because of his looks. This isn’t a friggen popularity contest…

So now we’re left with three very talented people, I’m pretty happy with this top three. They’re all great singers and deserve to win. Personally I want one of the Davids to win, leaning towards Archuleta but he needs more experience. On the other hand however, Archuleta winning would give him the experience he needs.

It will be interesting the next couple shows. It’s gonna be close now unless someone really starts messing up.

American Idol - 4/30/08

[ Edit: Brooke White was eliminated ]

This week’s Idol theme was Neil Diamond songs. Each person sang two songs each. Went smoothly besides Paula having a brain-lapse at half time and thinking Castro sang twice. Guess they were moving too fast for her, or maybe she just wanted Castro’s turn to be over already.

Jason Castro: Castro sang Forever in Blue Jeans and September Morning. Yet again, Castro clearly shows his lack of skill at being a vocalist. Both performances were easily forgettable and very boring. Why is this ‘tard still in the competition?

David Cook: David sang both I’m Alive and All I Really Need Is You. Again, Cook is the man and his performances were excellent on each count.

Brooke White: Brooke murdered, er, sang I’m A Believer and I Am I Said. God, what is there really to say about her? She still can’t remember lyrics, had to write some on her hands. The playing of instruments by her is getting old as well. It just distracts her and makes her sing even worse. Focus on SINGING, not playing. She’s also boring to watch, just stands (or sits) there motionless. Her vocals are bad, her performance is bad. How is she still in this as well?

David Archuleta: Archuleta sang Sweet Caroline and Coming to America. Along with Cook, this David shows he has the talent and what it takes to win Idol. His performances were great tonight. He didn’t seem to be as shy as normal either, which is good.

Syesha Mercado: Syesha sang Hello Again and Thank the Lord for the Night. Her performances like previous ones were good, but she doesn’t seem to really stand out.

I’m betting the bottom two are going to be Brooke again, and probably Syesha. Hopefully Brooke will finally get knocked off.

I’d prefer to see Castro get his lame ass kicked out, really getting sick of him. Just can’t see it happening.

[ Edit: Carly Smithson was eliminated ]

Andrew Lloyd Webber was the mentor for American Idol’s remaining top 6 this week.

The two people that seemed to be out of their element tonight were Brooke and Jason. Simon said Brooke seemed to be straining while she sang (which is exactly what I was thinking) and she messed up in the beginning, forgetting the lyrics (which made her look worse at the end). So (again), she had to stop and start her song over. Jason was boring, boring, boring. He_has_no_oomph. Simon’s response: It was the longest two minutes of his life (Girls, you really need to get past the “oh he’s so cute!” phase and see him for where he is at this stage of the competition. Compared to the other 5 (well 4, if we exclude Brooke) he_sucks.)

And for you Jason lovers (gags) this is for you.

Carly rocked. She put on a really good show. She was having fun, really getting into it. I really really hope she doesn’t get booted off before Brooke and Jason. I have that strange feeling though that people just can not get passed her appearance/tattoo, and_that_sucks for her.

Syesha’s performance was sexay, but yet…I couldn’t help noticing a few pitchy points at times. (damn Randy haha) She put on a good show though, like Carly did. I was ‘entertained’ and enjoyed it.

David A. is so funny. The kid sings so good, seems perfectly comfortable when he’s up there on stage singing. But once he stops and stands in front of the judges he loses it. Suddenly there is this dorky acting, shy kid standing there. haha It’s_cute. But that’s not point, is it. He sings damn good, especially for someone so young (17). And of course he did great tonight (was there any doubt?). I don’t think anyone has to worry about him getting the boot tonight.

I was a little worried for David Cook. He wasn’t exactly in his element tonight now was he. BUT, as usual, he pulled it off (even though Simon wasn’t too excited about his performance).

Okay so who will get the boot this week? I’m hoping for Brooke or Jason…leaning more towards Brooke though. To me she has now replaced the annoying Kristy. She’s going to hang around just to annoy the shit out of me.

[ Edit: Kristy Lee Cook was eliminated ]

Well there are so few left in Idol now I can just shoot off one by one in a quick list, so here we go with my little mini-reviews.

Jason Castro: Well as usual, I didn’t like Castro at all. I hate his looks, his instruments and his voice, plain and simple. He won’t be going anywhere though, because as usual, he makes all the little girls scream.

Kristy Lee Cook: As usual, I didn’t like this Cook at all. She still looks like an overgrown brat and acts like one. Her performance was mediocre as usual, very bland and unimpressive. Why she is still in the competition at this point is beyond me.

Syesha Mercado: Her performance was typical for her, not too much to say about it. Like we’ve said before here, she isn’t a bad singer but she really doesn’t have a large fan base. She’s in danger I think for that fact alone. She was one of the better female performances for the night and she picked a tough song as well and did well with it.

David Archuleta: Archuleta was the man as usual. I have no doubts that he’ll be continuing on. I’ve yet to be disappointed by this kid.

Carly Smithson: Her performance was alright tonight. She still doesn’t ‘wow’ me at all. She is at risk for being in the bottom three again, it won’t surprise me if she ends up there again.

Brooke White: Brooke bored me as usual, I really didn’t care for the performance tonight.

David Cook: David’s performance was pretty good, he shouldn’t have to worry about going. Like Simon said, he has a lot of potential that he showed off with this performance. So points to David from me.

I think the bottom three is going to be all women. I’m looking at Kristy (obviously), Carly (because she’s been down there a few times now) and Brooke (just because she’s boring and I don’t care for her).

Bottom two will probably be Kristy and Brooke, and if the planets are aligned correctly, maybe, just maybe that little twat Kristy will get kicked off for good.

So who do you think will be going and why?
