David Cook wins American Idol 5/21/08

bren Avatar

Cook beats Archuleta by 12 million votes.

Did we see that coming? Even though the night before the judges tried to sway the audience into voting for Archie. Bad, bad judges. But at least Simon apologized to Cook before the winner was announced. Maybe he knew the results before hand and was trying to save face?

So what did you think of the show?

Can anyone say “Blast from the Past”? Does anyone even know who Donna Summers is (err was)? Seeing her being ‘helped’ down the stairs was a bit depressing. And Bryan Adams looks so old. Nothing like making us ‘old timers’ feel much older by putting them up there.

I have to admit I enjoyed Cook singing with ZZ Top. He seemed to fit right in with his raspy voice. And ZZ Top is from ‘my time’, so I could get into it. “Sharp Dressed Man” brought back some good memories. So that was the best part of the show for me.

The worst part (for me) was having to watch Jason Castro sing again. Funny, he sang by himself (they couldn’t find anyone to match up with him like they did with everyone else?) and I couldn’t find the link on YouTube. I guess I wasn’t the only one who didn’t care to see him again.

So David Cook is the New American Idol. I wonder how many people are happy with the outcome, and how many of you are disappointed. I liked both of the David’s, but I am glad Cook won. It could have gone either way for me and I would have been happy.

If you missed it, or would like to see it again, here are some links from YouTube. I think I got them all (except Jason’s).

Enjoy…and hopefully we will see you next year. (The song names link to videos.)

American Idol - 5/21/08 Final Elimination

Orion Avatar

[ Edit: David Cook has won ]

Well, after weeks of auditions, trials and voting it has finally come down to the final two contestants. David Cook and David Archuleta have both come a long way since the start and are both extraordinary singers.

  • Cook sang: “I Still Haven’t Found What I’m Looking For,” “Dream Big” and “The World I know”
  • Archuleta sang: “Don’t Let the Sun Go Down On Me,” “In This Moment” and “Imagine”

This is a very tough call and one very close matchup. They are both very deserving in their own rights to win the competition. Both of them have been strong from day one and never truly failed to impress on any songs they sang.

If I did however have to choose a winner, I’m going to have to say David Archuleta. Not because he is a better singer (however he did seem to have a stronger showing on the final night of singing), but it seems to me he has a bigger fanbase than Cook. He always seems to get the loudest cheers and most little girls screaming. I could be way off base though, but the impression I get is that Archuleta is going to win.

Either way I couldn’t be happier with the final two, whoever wins it doesn’t even matter; they’re both going to get picked up by record labels without a doubt.

David Archuleta’s and David Cook’s Audition / American Idol

They’ve come a long way haven’t they. Here are David Archuleta’s and David Cook’s audition for American Idol. It’s fun to watch these knowing where they are now.

David A.

David C.

As much as I like David A. I still hope Cook wins. I’m glad those 2 are the last standing though. It’s going to be a good show next week.

American Idol - 5/14/08 Elimination

Orion Avatar

[ Edit: Syesha Mercado was eliminated ]

Well the top three sang tonight, it’s going to be weird doing the reviews because I don’t have anything negative to say about the remaining people. Now that everyone I didn’t like is gone I’m at a loss for harsh words. So before I critique, here is a recap of what they all sang.

  • David Archuleta: “And So It Goes”, “With You” and “Longer”
  • Syesha Mercado: “If I Ain’t Got You”, “Fever” and “Hit Me Up”
  • David Cook: “First Time I Ever Saw Your Face”, “Dare You to Move” and “I Don’t Want to Miss a Thing”

David Archuleta had a strong showing again tonight. I think all three of his performances were top quality yet again. I don’t understand why the judges didn’t like him singing that pop-style song genre though. He did it well and is flexible with what he can sing. He isn’t restricted to just ballads.

Archuleta is also coming along well with the whole shyness thing. He was really getting into the first song and worked the audience into it. So that brings me back to not understanding why the judges complained about it.

Syesha Mercado got a lot of unnecessary heat tonight from the judges. I dunno why Randy was constantly saying it wasn’t right for her. The song choices seemed to fit her vocals perfectly and she really got me into each song. So it was just weird to see some of the judges complaining. She has that foxy woman thing going for her that works well for songs such as “Fever.”

David Cook had the best song of the night with his last one, “I Don’t Want to Miss a Thing.” That was the highlight of the night for me. The other two songs were also strong performances as usual. I only wish he got some slightly more rock styled songs, he really comes to life with those.

The judges were really confusing me though, especially Randy. He just seemed to have nothing good to say at all. I found myself (strangely) agreeing with Paula a lot instead of Simon this time.

This is a tough one to call though, but I’m leaning towards Syesha being the one that goes home. The “Fever” song just seemed a bit out there, and not very in tune with the theme of Idol. The “working the chair” bit seemed a bit risky to do, maybe if the audience was a bunch of men it could of worked better. So in light of that, and all the criticism she got from the judges (them being able to influence votes), I think she’s going to be the one leaving.

American Idol 5/7/08 Follow-Up

Orion Avatar

Well, I think I speak for a lot of people when I say, THANK GOD JASON IS GONE. That was seriously getting annoying that he was still in the competition up to this point. He really should of gone long before Michael Johns or Carly. Brooke and Jason shouldn’t of made it as far as they should of. He really had to go. His last performance was atrocious, especially when he forget his lines and just sang “la la la” and hummed along with the music. How do you mess up that bad this far into the competition?

Castro Dumb

I think he also knew it was his time to go. The way he talked it sounded like he realized he didn’t deserve to be above Syesha or the Davids. He even mentioned his inexperience coming in to haunt him.

The Jason fans are quite the rabid bunch as well. One girl claims to have voted over a thousand times the other night.

Jason Votes

Now I’m pretty sure that’s an exaggeration, but still. 95% of the people that voted for him were blindly voting for him because of his looks. This isn’t a friggen popularity contest…

So now we’re left with three very talented people, I’m pretty happy with this top three. They’re all great singers and deserve to win. Personally I want one of the Davids to win, leaning towards Archuleta but he needs more experience. On the other hand however, Archuleta winning would give him the experience he needs.

It will be interesting the next couple shows. It’s gonna be close now unless someone really starts messing up.
