I read that the most obvious way to detect a contented cat is to look at his eyes. Are they slitted? Then he is happy.
Purring is important, but the eyes are the deciding factor.

My cat always tries to get me to pet him while I am using the computer by rubbing his face on my hand. It drives me crazy, my keyboard skills are bad enough without help from the cat.
